Abscess Symptoms

Abscess symptoms vary greatly, depending on the location where the abscess forms. A number of symptoms that can appear in each type of abscess are:

1. Breast abscess symptoms

  • Breasts are red, swollen, painful, and warm to the touch
  • Fluid or pus coming out of the nipple
  • Fever for more than 3 days and does not improve after treatment
  • Breast pain or a burning sensation appears
  • The breast hurts so much that the mother is unable to breastfeed her child

2. Symptoms of tooth abscess

  • Cramps in the jaw and neck muscles

5. Brain abscess symptoms

  • Persistent headache
  • Neck feels stiff
  • Visual disturbances, such as double vision, blur, or blur
  • Behavioral changes, such as confusion and restlessness
  • Nerve dysfunction, such as paralysis and slurred speech

6. Symptoms of spinal nerve abscess

  • Severe pain that can spread to the arms and legs
  • Unable to control the bladder and bowels
  • Easy to get tired and faint
  • Numbness at the bottom of the abscess
  • Fever

When should you go to the doctor?

Check with your doctor if you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above. Examination also needs to be done when a skin abscess causes the following symptoms:

Abscess Diagnosis

To diagnose an abscess, the doctor will ask questions about symptoms, past injuries, and medications the patient is taking. After that, the doctor will perform a physical examination if the patient is suspected of having a skin and mouth abscess.In patients suspected of having an internal organ abscess, the doctor will carry out supporting examinations in the form of:

  • Blood tests, to detect the type of bacteria, virus, or parasite causing the infection.
  • X-ray, to determine how extensive the infection is and to see the condition of the internal organs where the abscess is located.
  • CT scan , to get a clearer picture compared to an X-ray
  • MRI , to detect the location of deeper abscesses that are not visible on other scanning procedures.
